Sneezing, a runny nose and watery eyes are all sure signs that spring is here. While most of us are grateful that Cheshire has thawed out and we can begin to spend time outdoors and around town, allergy sufferers are likely looking for some relief with 2011 having been one of the worst years for pollen. Though we can’t escape pesky allergens when we’re outside, there are ways to prevent allergies from irritating your senses inside your Cheshire home.

1. While this may not be the most feasible way to reduce allergens in your Cheshire home, replacing wall-to-wall carpeting with hardwood flooring will prevent pollen and dust from accumulating where you walk. If it’s not in the budget to replace your flooring, upgrade your vacuum cleaner. Vacuums with a HEPA filter are specially made to capture most allergens.

2. If you’re relaxed about letting guests and other residents leave their shoes on in your Cheshire home, you may want to put your foot down. Allergens stick to the soles of shoes and will spread all over your house. Place a doormat outside of your entryway and a doormat inside to keep allergens outside where they belong, and ask guests to kindly remove their shoes as they enter your Cheshire home.

3. It’s important to keep up with cleaning or replacing the air filters in your Cheshire home. Whenever you have the heat or air conditioning on with an old filter, you’re forcing allergens all throughout the air you breathe. Simply follow the directions on the air filter package for information on when to swap them out.

4. Room air filters are particularly effective at eliminating pollen in your Cheshire home. While they don’t trap allergens that have settled in rugs, furniture or drapes, they are great for getting rid of particles still floating in the air.

5. Sometimes it’s great to keep the windows open and air out your Cheshire home, but make sure you check the air quality outside on a website like Weather.com before letting some fresh air in.

6. Sleep in later and go to bed tissue-free when you take a shower and wash your hair before bed. Pollen can stick to your hair when you’ve been outside all day, and bringing those allergens into your bed is a sure way to keep you up sniffling all night.

With all of the rain we’ve had in Cheshire so far this spring, allergies are something a lot of us will have to deal with.
