Cheshire CT Celebrates Halloween
Oh Halloween! That special time of year when the children of Cheshire Connecticut get to run around our streets in full costume, collecting candy and bouncing off the walls. Where did they ever came up with such a concept?
There are many different versions of the origins of Halloween, but the most plausible theory goes something like this…
According to the Connecticut Pumpkin Patch website, Halloween originated in the British Isles out of the Pagan Celtic celebration of Samhain. As far back as 5 B.C., it was believed that spirits rose from the dead and mingled with the living on this day. The Celts left food at their doors to encourage good spirits and wore masks to scare off the bad ones.
In the 1840s when much of the Irish Immigrated into America, Halloween found its way to the United States. By the late 1800's, there was a move in America to mold Halloween into a holiday more about community and neighborhood get togethers than about the supernatural. Halloween is now the second largest commercial holiday, resulting in more than $2 billion spent on candy each year.
